Group fitness in a time a Covid

You've heard media discussing the CARES Act for gig workers. And, about special assistance to restaurant employees, like Howard Schulz's emergency fund. And, the SBA Paycheck Protection Program that can be used by self-employed LLC's and sole proprietors (it ran out of money). And, other plans like extensive food stamp programs. But where does that leave GFI's, who hobble together an income that's far more extensive than any one of these plans considers? Here's everything we know at this time.

Covid Stories

"The onset of Covid-19 has impacted all of society, myself included. Those of us in the Fitness Industry have been impaired and challenged in a unique way.

When Covid reached Washington state and non-essential businesses were shut down, this included both my places of work, [a certain franchise fitness chain] Studios and [an indepdent gym]. Seattle county was advised to work from home, which in my case is not possible. Despite a petition to the CEO, [the franchise] refused to pay its employees any fraction of their wages during the closure, and directed us towards Unemployment. Being a multimillion dollar corporation, this was extremely upsetting and disappointing, and highlighted the fact that Trainers are not being properly cared for. I have yet to receive any unemployment benefits despite being approved for an extremely meager stipend a week. I have also applied for cash assistance through DSHS in order to try and remain at my apartment.

Some trainers have opted to offer virtual classes and training sessions to clients. This route is not available to me, as I am injured. I was diagnosed two months ago with a subchondral insufficiency fracture to the right knee. The healing time is extensive, which also involves crutches and non weight bearing activity. In person I can describe the exercises, and rely on clients to grab weights and equipment. Due to my limitation, I am not able to provide any type of virtual training, leaving me with no income.

The onslaught of Covid and the repercussions brought on with this pandemic have highlighted the extensive lack of care in place for Independent Contractors, Coaches, and Trainers.- Kristyn, Trainer & Coach
